As summer sails into the past, many assume the boating season is over. But here at Northshore Boat Club, we’d say the best is just beginning.
Autumn – even winter – brings a different kind of magic to the Solent and Chichester Harbour. The water quietens, the light softens, and the pace shifts in all the right ways.
Whether you’re a seasoned member or just starting to explore the idea of boat club membership, here’s why this time of year might be the perfect moment to get afloat.
Boating in Chichester Harbour and the Solent After Summer
As the pace onshore slows down, the harbour opens up. With fewer boats about, you’ll find more space to explore, calmer conditions, and hidden corners that feel brand new again.
Whether it’s an early-morning pootle through the creeks or a still, silver Solent crossing, this time of year delivers a kind of calm you just don’t get in summer. And with the fleet ready and waiting, all you need to do is book, turn up, and go.
Why Autumn and Winter Are Great for Boating
Some of the most memorable boating happens when you least expect it. A bright November morning. A still December day. A flask of something warm and the whole harbour to yourself.
At Northshore Boat Club, we make it easy to grab those spontaneous windows – because boating shouldn’t stop when the calendar changes. It just gets better in different ways.
Year-Round Boating, Without the Ownership Burden
Our managed fleet is ready when you are – no servicing, no storage, no maintenance days. Members can hold up to four bookings at a time, with unlimited access throughout the year.
Forecast looking good mid-week? Book it. Fancy a trip over to Bembridge or a lazy loop past East Head? Go for it. It’s all yours, all year round.
Build Confidence with Cold-Season Boating
With the harbour a little quieter and the conditions often calmer, it’s a great time to brush up on your boating. Practise your boat handling, test new routes, or explore areas you’ve not ventured into before.
If you’re a member and feel like a refresher would be helpful, just let us know. We’re happy to help you feel confident on the water year-round.
What to Wear for Winter Boating in the UK
Being warm and dry on the water makes all the difference. Here’s our recommended 3-layer system for boating in the colder months — ideal for Chichester Harbour and the Solent.
- Base layer (next to skin): Technical synthetic or merino wool top and leggings. Avoid cotton — it gets cold when wet.
- Mid layer (insulation): Fleece or soft-shell jacket to trap warmth while allowing movement.
- Outer layer (protection): Waterproof, windproof jacket (and trousers if needed). Breathable and comfortable is key.
Don’t forget:
- Warm hat or hood
- Gloves or glove liners
- Warm socks and proper footwear
- Sunglasses (yes, even in winter)
Member tip: Not sure? Ask us. We’re happy to talk through kit suggestions or layering tips before your trip.
